Must be the cable. Buy it from walmart, if it still happens then return it and your xbox is fukd.
Ok i know this might now be the best place to ask this question, but i will continue. almost a half a year ago now i was playing PC early in the morning and accidentally tipped over my xbox. i later plugged it in and i got the red rings. Error 73, top left section isn't glowing (first player i believe). i finally decided to get this fixed so i googled this problem and it said it could be two things. It could be a chip in it or the Video cable. so i plugged in my xbox and turned it on with video cable unplugged. it started normal with no red ring. then i plug in the cable, and red rings. do you think that it could be the video cable? i decided to ask this question because i didn't want to go blow 40 bucks on a new cable if it doesn't help (cash is short these days).

Well, if a machine doesn't work with some component installed, does work when it isn't, and ceases to work when it is reinstalled, said component might have something to do with it. :P
EDIT:

you can further narrow the error down to the secondary error codes by pushing (i believe) your cd tray button and the controller sync button. i might be wrong, you dont normally retain that info once you get it fixed lol.
i had an e74 1022 which sucked. but that bitch ran for 24 hours a day most of the time, for 2 years. you read the secondary error code by the number of the quadrant.(player number)
EDIT: this is what an e73 is:
E73: I/O Hardware Error - Couldn't calibrate HSIO Bus from edram: this error is likely caused by a problem with the Ethernet port or supporting control devices
