Net Neutrality is at a very large risk as is the internet as a whole. it may seem odd that anything could destroy the internet but it really is possible. the telephone companies run the wires and systems on which the internet operates but they desire more, the phone companies want full control over the internet and its content. they desire to make the internet more or less the same as television, where only major cooperations have any say in the content. this seems impossible but it has happened with Radio and the newspapers. in the beginning anyone could run a radio station or run a printing press it didn't require much. but now the government has forbidden this activity and the government under heavy influence from the phone company's is trying to undermine the internet.

<strike>the internet is ours</strike>
<strike>the internet is no one's</strike>
<strike>the internet is the consumer's</strike>
the internet is the corporation's

please help to save the internet. it may seem as if it will always be there but recently there was an attempt made to put a tax on all online content and that could very well be the beginning of the end of the internet

I'm aware of the problem, but frankly, I'm not too stressed about it. It's not going to happen. Even if it did happen, I'm sure new parties would arise to connect people. Hell I'd be the first one connecting everyone in this building.

The Internet is not just a bunch of wires, it's an idea. You can take our wires away from us, but you can never kill the idea.

OMG, that is so ironic! I clicked "Add Reply" and my router announced I wasn't connected Just a temporal disconnect though.

Bah... ya can't censor the internet, it's a major freedom of speech platform... people would riot in the streets if the telcos did something that stupid...

But if they did it successfully the internet would cease to exist as a medium for true communication and will end up being another "service" to offer like cable or phone service, or instead of those.

But, you can create a total sub-internet that cannot be stopped, there are already programs that exist that can do this and are doing this. That and Virtual Private Networking with Encryption (such as AES-256) would make it impossible to detect content to censor.

Even use a proxy and use encryption between the proxies.

And with IPv6, you have a near-infinite amount of IP addresses, so you'd have to spend years blocking IPs or even Blocks of IPs to try and shut everything down.

So... the telcos and the big wigs out there who think they can control content are nuts... sure they'll try, but i can gaurentee that you'll always, ALWAYS be able to work around access restrictions.

Trying to stop people from communicating is about as successful as trying to stop a 10 foot snowball going down a hill, with your bare hands...

It just simply isn't going to happen.

I agree. On a related note: there was an article on PC Magazine a year or so ago about rumors that Google was buying up "dark fiber" (fiber that isn't currently being used) so they could become their own ISP/backbone. As far as I'm aware, these are simply rumors (considering I've heard nothing else on this topic), but it would be nice if it was true. Hmm....

*Looks for article*

Here it is.

but your connection to the internet can be stopped. you have a connection through all the underground cables and overhead lines. if they were to revert you and the rate at which other people can stream your content to near dial up speeds they are effectively censoring your site because people don't like going to a site that takes five hours to load. also they could simply make it so to post anything you need to have a preassigned number like a password directly written into your host name so any content you posted no matter how unrecognizable it was would be stopped. they really do have the power to do that and if done slowly enough it would almost be like the Nazi takeover. they didn't one day just enslave the Jews no. they did it slowly over time almost so slowly that they didn't notice. the same could happen with internet restriction. first its just a little tax it doesn't matter its just added to your bill anyway. then the tax gets more specific and you find yourself saying things like, " better not post flash thats expensive" and then the taxes slowly raise until very few people are hosting. eventually they could just cut those people off completely and it would cause a stir but it would be small enough to go away.

again i don't know if things will really happen this way. sounds a little paranoid to me but always prepare for the worst. just because you don't think everyones out to get you doesn't mean their not.

and about that article about google financing the space elevator i saw a movie that involved that.

Posting videos that are not hosted here on wiremod.com has no effect on the bandwidth.
