Here's a software.
Hey Wiremod,
Can anybody tell me how to transform a small video clip into an animated Gif avatar for the forums?
I tried Print Screen, but the video is too long for me to do that. I want to make a simple looping avatar of the scene in Half Life: Full Life Consequences where he says "It's a good day to do what has to be done by me to help my brother to defeat the enemys".
If anyone can recommend a software, or make one for me, I would be forever in debt to you.

I use a program called GIF Movie Gear.
You just drag the AVI into the program and it splits up the frames. Then I do some optimizations on it to cut down the file size. Like decrease the color palette, remove unnecessary frames, etc.
You can actually just drag the avi into the program and resave it as gif without doing anything else.. but thats not recommended. Here's one I made a while back for something:
![]()
Actually it will save a tiny bit of space if I were to remove it. When you optimize a gif, pixels that don't change from frame to frame are not duplicated, only one copy of those pixels exists and everything else is laid over top. So those little pixels changing as my netgraph changes are adding extra image data to the gif.
But whatever, I don't really care, I made that gif a long time ago as a quick example for someone.
Edit:
Here's how it works. Notice the first frame, everything is drawn. But in all subsequent frames, only pixels that change are drawn. This drastically saves on file size. In all frames you can see the FPS counter changing pixels, thus adding data to the image.
![]()

No, AVI is the only video format it will import.
You can use Media Convert - free and on line - convert and split sound, ringtones, images, docs - to convert for free without any software.
