What I'm thinking is like a flash version of wire so you can test stuff out to see if it makes the right data etc without starting up gmod.

My friend and I were working on a game inspired by wiremod that's not exactly the same, but has challenges that you must solve using chips/gates and wiring. It would be really similar, but it's in 2D instead of 3D so it has to be made differently.
However, I don't know if it'll ever actually happen. We kind of stopped working on it.
Since the gates and chips are nothing made up, there are several such softwares already on the market, although I'm not sure if you can find any for free.

This reminds me of what I think was the original intention of Black Phoenix's WireEdit tool, but I don't know what happened to it....
Can you not keep GMod permanently in the background? So it's only ever an Alt-Tab away....
This is what I try to do, and I'm only running on a single-core machine at present.
I did not see much interest in wire edit, but yeah, I could evolve program so it would execute some lua code, and probably simulate gates.
