If you don't know already, there is a wiremod IRC channel. You should review the rules and etiquette later in this before you join.
Where to go:
The wiremod IRC channel is on irc.gamesurge.net in #wiremod. If you want, you can use this Java Applet from gamesurge's own website. (link is configured to take you to #wiremod channel automatically after you enter a username)
GameSurge >> Chat
Rules:
To clarify: The IRC channel does not have an official set of rules (which means we can ban you anytime from the channel, but mostly happens when we get annoyed). If you don't want to be a target for a ban, then please understand our etiquette first.
- Don't annoy the ops. This includes annoying other users (who then annoy the ops).
Channel Guidelines:
Remember: 90% of the people on the wiremod IRC are old timer wire modders, many don't even play garrysmod anymore. People help if they feel like helping, and the less annoying you are, the faster and more likely you are helped.
- Saying someone's name once is fine. Many of us set up sounds and highlights to get attention. Saying our names constantly will piss people off. Don't even do it if you see others doing it (most likely those two people are friends and are trolling each other)
- Do your homework before you ask. Asking how to fix your wiremod install without even first reading stickies or trying it yourself is the second fastest way to get someone annoyed.
- Getting help on IRC | workaround.org That will help you a lot in understanding IRC etiquette.
- Don't ask to ask. It's polite in the real world, it's annoying on IRC.
- GOLDEN RULE: ENGLISH. PERIOD. maekin on ebig sentnce wtih masiv mispelings IS EXTREMELY ANNOYING. In fact, you probably won't even get a warning, you will just get banned.
Useful Tips:
- Understand that getting a response could take anywhere from a couple minutes, to literally hours. Just because you don't get a response doesn't mean nobody knows or doesn't care. It's common practice to post a question, and go back to what you were doing, and check back in a few minutes.
- Try to only use someone's name if you are actively in a conversation with them, or you know your question/statement ONLY applies to them. Sometimes a person will answer a question then want to go on with their business, and highlighting by saying their name can be very distracting.
- After your question is answered, consider sticking around. Sometimes people will make a comment on your question half an hour later, or someone might follow up and see if they helped. Who knows, you might be answering questions from time to time yourself, or even suggest and idea that the devs will pick up on.
Last Notes:
Many of us don't use the wiremod IRC channel for just wiremod. You can find some of your favorite (and not so favorite) moderators and admins right there in that channel, and have a chance to see our fun, sporting side. For example, Jat Goodwin and myself tend to team up in a few rounds of ARMA II or Eve Online for a bit of mayhem from time to time; if you don't act like a complete idiot, we/others might invite you into their games as well.
On another note, thanks to the wiremod channel, I've discovered some interesting other facts of life, ranging from the awsome Dwarf Fortress (and the Mike Mayday tileset), to developing my absolute adoration (to the point of borderline mental illness) of raccoons (damn you TomyLobo!). Yeah, I love raccoons, and you should too. (no that's not my video).
