THANK GOD, I've been looking for a good homing missile, I tried the one on the wire wiki but it is too simple and not very effective, and giant
I originally posted this [ame="http://www.wiremod.com/showthread.php?t=1569"]here[/ame], and I've gone through about 8 versions since then. The curving below you has been corrected, and it now detonates as soon as it is within range, instead of orbiting around you. The accuracy is now insane. I've spent about half an hour trying to not get killed by it. It's been redesigned to allow it to launch from a vehicle, so, instead of turning to attack the target immediately, it will gain some distance from the launcher first. Because it is based around the PHX AMRAAM missile, it is possible to destroy it before it kills you. Tell me if you manage to do that - I've been trying for quite a while.
The attachments I've included are what I hope to be the final version of the missile, and the expression chip I use to control it (which may be useful for building an auto-pilot or something). Here are some pics:
It shouldn't be difficult to adjust the target finder to attack whatever you please. Having it attack you is just a nice way of seeing how well it works.
The only control this missile uses is your Numpad ".", press it once to fire the missile, and it will handle the rest.
Edit February 12th, 2008: This version of the missile no longer works, the new version can be found here.

I have tried multiple attempts at a good homing missile, and I found the AMRAAM to be too small to use manuever corection. My best one was done using a torpedo.
I'm gonna give this a try and see how it works in-game. Also, you say it has a problem with seeking out it's owner? I wonder if a wire-numpad could be setup for an automatic "change target" on the target finder.

Ok, some minor bugfixes have been included in the attachments below. The last version was still spazzing at close ranges, occasionally. Normally it's supposed to slow down when it's not aiming at the target properly, but I only made it slow down when elevation or bearing were greater than 15, not when they were less than 15... It would generally correct itself and hit the target anyway, but now it will be faster and more reliable. Also, it now travels at the maximum speed that objects in the source engine can travel: 1980 inches per second (about 113 miles per hour). It's now physically impossible to outrun it, without teleporting or something. The pause at launch, where the engine emitters turn on, but the missile doesn't move, has also been gotten rid of.
No, it will seek out the owner just fine. According to the game I'm running, it has killed me 68 times already. The manuevering is pretty good. I have yet to see anything that it couldn't kill promptly, except for NPCs with really high health.I have tried multiple attempts at a good homing missile, and I found the AMRAAM to be too small to use manuever corection. The player_seeking_missile text file should be placed in garrysmod/garrysmod/data/adv_duplicatorwhat do I do with the text it shows after i click the link[/b]
The missilecontrolchip text file should be placed in garrysmod/garrysmod/data/Expression_Gate
If those folders don't exist, you can create them and it will still work. Just remember that it matters whether or not you use the correct capitalization.
Once you have placed those in their respective folders, you can get the amraam by going to your advanced duplicator tool. In the list on the right you should see an item named player_seeking_missile_8_4. With the advanced duplicator tool equipped, select that item and press the button which says "open". It will take a moment to create the missile and ghost it, and then it will be ready to spawn. Just left click wherever you want it to go.
You don't need to use the expression chip to use the missile, but I'll explain how to use it anyway. To spawn the expression chip, go to the expression chip tool. If you don't have a list of chips, go up to the top and select browse. Among the expression chips should be a chip called missilecontrolchip. Select and place it. To wire it up, give it a distance, bearing and elevation from a beacon sensor (make sure it's pointing forwards, and is upright on your missile), a time from a timer (wire the timer's clk to the missile's thrust output), and an IO value. I prefer to use a toggled numpad input to provide the IO value, but you can use a different configuration if you prefer. Place pitching (up-down) yawing (left-right), and thrusting (forwards) thrusters on your vehicle, in the same configuration I used on the missile. Wire them to the pitch, yaw, thrust outputs as appropriate. Place a detonator on your missile, and wire it to the expression chip's detonate output. I used a thrust value of 16.65 for the thrusters on the missile; depending on the mass of your object, you may need greater or lower values.
Wow, simply wow.
And what i think he means by "problems with seeking out the owner" is that it DOES seek out the owner. He wants it to only kill other people.
Ah. Well, as I said in the first post, it shouldn't be difficult to adjust the target finder to attack whatever you please. You just get the target finder tool, put in what you want it to target, and then left-click on the missile's target finder to update it. If you want to save that configuration, you can just use the advanced duplicator to copy and/or save it. I've done that several times to see how well the missiles work against NPCs and other targets.Wow, simply wow.

Yea i tried that with NPC's and it is simply AMAZING i would love to know how you made that thing accurate enough to hit a scanner flying around with 100% accuracy. I even hit a bird!
This is amazing. I am blown away by the accuracy of this thing.
